Behavior Modification v. Heart Transformation
A New Year’s Resolution is a resolve of will to bring about change. But why is it that our renewed determination never seems to bring about the lasting change we are looking for? It’s because the problem doesn’t lie in our habits and environment, it’s rooted in our hearts—sin.
Ever find a fix that works but won’t stick? A change in habitat/environment can change our habits temporarily, but it won’t last if our hearts aren’t transformed by God. It’s why the criminal can go to jail and commit crimes when they get out. Why an addict can go to rehab and relapse. Why someone can go on a diet and gain all the weight back. The change you are looking for isn’t external. It’s internal. If the inside changes the external comes naturally. A biproduct. There is fruit produced from a changed heart. Jesus came to give you a new heart. He came to solve the problem of sin, not to change your external environment and bad habits. From the inside out. Not the outside in.
Rules and religion focus on the external, the person hasn’t actually changed. Their sinful motives and desires would be acted upon if not for the rules. Jesus wants relationship. He wants to give you a new heart and set you free completely. He doesn’t want you to give up bad habits because you are forced, He gives you a heart that desires to be rid of these sins. Transformation. Totally new creation in Him.
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”
Don’t resolve. Surrender. Only the blood of Jesus conquers sin.
If there is one resolution I make this year it’s to surrender my life totally and completely to Jesus Christ for Him to have His way in me. Every. Single. Day.
